In 1913 Josef Gočár created a unique furniture set for the actor Otto Boleška. Part of this experimental ensemble, which combines a bedroom with a study, is this impressive sofa. Gočár very impressively combined utilitarian and artistic function in this design. Gočár has solved this ensemble in a very dynamic way, sharply bending and deforming the plate-like legs that grow through the entire structure of the sofa. This piece of furniture certainly reflects a memory of both late 19th century neo-baroque interiors and Art Nouveau.

Josef Gočár (1880 - 1945) occupies a leading position in the history of Czech architecture in the first half of the 20th century. He belongs to a strong generation of architects born at the end of the 19th century, for whom it is characteristic that they managed to change several architectural styles during their lives. The focus of Gočár's work was undoubtedly cubism, national style and later functionalism.
